Teaching is something I have loved since I was in High School. I vividly remembered when I was in high school, I was helping my classmates with their assignments and home work. I would regularly gather the kids in my neighborhood after school and assist them with their assignments and home work. During the summer months, when schools closed, I would have summer classes for the kids in my neighborhood.
My teaching career actually started during my undergraduate studies in Physics and Mathematics at the University of Liberia in Monrovia, Liberia. I was a teaching assistant in the Physics Department. After college, I started teaching physics at a number of high schools in Monrovia and last taught at the Cathedral Catholic High School in Monrovia.
When I came to the States in 1991 and began working with a transportation company but knew that was not my calling. So, in 2004, I started teaching math at Suitland High School in Princes Georges County, Maryland.
My first year at Suitland High School was a challenge. Student misbehavior was a major problem. The students at Suitland High School were completely different from the students I knew in Liberia. Somehow I survived the first year. Things got much better during my second year at Suitland High School. Subsequently years at Suitland were fantastic.
Teaching gives me internal joy and satisfaction. There is no joy comparable than seeing your students grow day by day ,month by month, and year by year. Just knowing that there are minds waiting to be molded, keeps me going into the classroom every day. I see myself as a role model to my students. They look up to me for guidance and directions. And, it is my responsibility to provide the guidance and directions that they need. They need me to teach them self-control and self-discipline. They need me to teach to care for themselves, for others, and the world.
